Why boaters love it

North Currigee Campground sits on South Stradbroke Island, just across the Broadwater from the Gold Coast. Accessible by boat in under 20 minutes from Main Beach, it’s loved for its sandy beachside campsites, calm waters, and easy access to both the ocean side and the Broadwater. Its sheltered location and facilities make it one of the most convenient island camping options in SEQ.

Sheltered Broadwater beach provides safe swimming and boat access, while the campground itself offers BBQs, showers, and shady sites. Explore the walking tracks through the sand dunes to reach the surf side.

Getting there

Launch from Muriel Henchman Drive (Main Beach) Boat Ramp. Head north across the Broadwater and follow the marked channel past Wave Break Island. Currigee is located on the western shore of South Stradbroke Island, with sandy beach access in front of the campground.

Stick to the main channels, especially on lower tides. The Broadwater has shifting sandbanks, so check charts and keep an eye on depth. Once at North Currigee, beach your boat carefully or anchor just offshore.

Tide information

Best time: mid to high tide for easiest beach access. The Broadwater shallows shift, so arrive with enough water under your keel to avoid grounding.

Safety first

Always check weather, tides, and your gear before heading out. The Broadwater is sheltered, but conditions can change quickly with wind against tide.
Maritime Safety Queensland provides key boating safety resources.
North Currigee sits within Smooth waters, meaning equipment requirements are different to offshore.

Things to do

Camping

Book one of the shady beachfront campsites. Facilities include BBQs, showers, and toilets. Fires and generators are not permitted. Great for families and groups.

Fishing

Fish the Broadwater for flathead, bream, and whiting, or walk across to the surf beach for tailor and dart.

Swimming

Safe swimming inside the Broadwater. The surf side is accessible by walking tracks but has stronger rips — swim with care.

Walking & exploring

Take the track over the dunes to the surf side for a change of scenery. Look for wallabies and birdlife along the way.

Wildlife

North Currigee is home to wallabies, curlews, goannas, and plenty of birdlife. Respect the wildlife and do not feed them.
